The Saturday Six Pack With Mark Maynard, Episode 43
From an old converted barbershop inside the area’s largest all-nude strip club comes the forty-third episode of the Saturday Six Pack With Mark Maynard.
Moving from print media, Mark Maynard brings his interview style to the world of AM radio. In the first hour, New York Times best-selling author Shaka Senghor stops by the AM1700 studio as he concludes a whirlwind tour that included visiting with Oprah, being a guest on The Daily Show, and being part of a White House briefing. Shaka talks about his upbringing in Detroit, the events that led him to prison, and his subsequent transformation. He explains what led him to start a journal and become a writer as well as the pact he made with some fellow inmates including friend of the show Calvin Evans.
In the second hour, civil rights attorney Dick Soble joins Mark to talk about growing up in Boston, his time in AmeriCorps’ VISTA program, his involvement in the Red Squad case, and his current work with juvenile lifers.
Finally, filmmaker Donald Harrison talks with Mark about his documentary “Commie High”, a film that focuses on the history of Ann Arbor’s Community High School. The show ends with Donald getting the key piece of funding from the AM1700 listening audience that will ultimately make his project a reality.
